Hello, Beautiful Souls!
Can you believe it’s May already? Spring is officially in full bloom here in New York, the bees are starting to buzz (one of my favorites!), and everywhere you look, there is a sense of renewal. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a perfect time to shift our focus inward and shine a spotlight on YOU. Our mental health is incredibly important, and nurturing it can be as sweet as honey.
The Bumblebee Truth
I’ve been reflecting on the resilience of the bumblebee. Science tells us that their bodies are too heavy and their wings too small for flight, yet they soar anyway. In family recovery, we often embody that bee, carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. Mental health awareness isn’t about “fixing” the weight; it’s about strengthening our wings to carry it.
Cassandra Side Note: Did you know Mary Kay Ash used the bumblebee as her company’s highest symbol? She believed that, like the bee, we can achieve the impossible by just keeping on. We, too, can spread our wings, share our honey, and navigate through life’s clouds.
Our Loved Ones
While this post centers on our wellness, we never forget our loved ones. Their mental health can sometimes feel like a whirlwind. This month, let’s practice awareness by honoring their pace and being the steady light they can turn to when and if ready to ask for help.
The “Honey vs. Vinegar” Approach to Self-Care
We’ve all heard the saying, “You catch more bees with honey than vinegar.” This applies to our minds too! When we are harsh with ourselves, using the “vinegar” of shame and guilt, our mental health suffers. Instead, self-compassion—the honey—creates a space for us to breathe and thrive.
This May, I challenge you to try three “Cassandra-ied” habits:
- Take Your Lighthouse Breaths: When the whirlwind pulls at you, stop. Ground yourself with three deep breaths. Be the stone, not the storm.
- Check the “Fit over Format”: If a self-care habit feels like a chore, let it go! Find what fits you best. For example maybe it’s five minutes of meditation with cozy socks and a warm blanket instead of a 60 minute meditation.
- Leave Aspirations at the Door: For just five minutes a day, let go of wishing for change and embrace yourself as you are. You are enough, even amidst the mess.
You Are the Pilot of Your Own Flight
Remember, taking a break is not a “cop-out.” Choosing peace for an hour is refueling your spirit to keep flying.
If you’re feeling weighed down today, remember: the bumblebee doesn’t ask for permission to fly; it simply does. And so can you. Seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Mental health…is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going. – Noam Shpancer
Wishing you a month of warmth, honey, and steady light.
With love and wellness,
